RESULTS FOR 11-25-15

“The most important shot in golf is the next one.” — Ben Hogan

Our day-before-Thanksgiving tournament went off without a hitch. The turnout was a little low, but it appeared that everyone had a good time. Instead of the usual shotgun start, everyone began at hole #1. It was a little nippy by Southern California standards and later the wind kicked up in an easterly direction. I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving Day tomorrow, not just because of the food, but for all the things we have to be thankful for (like golf).

DSCN1069(sm) Pictured is Tony Merriman caught in mid-swing at hole #1 during today’s tournament. My camera wasn’t fast enough to freeze the action on his club. As you look past his hands along the club, the shaft gets blurrier as you go toward the head. The head is almost invisible. This gives you an idea of how much faster a club head moves in relation to a golfer’s hands.

Congratulations go out to our top golfers of the week: Jack Fenlon had the best gross score with an 84. Yours truly had the best net score with a 64. I sure wish there had been a turkey as today’s prize.

Regards,
Robert Escobedo

RESULTS FOR 11-19-15

“Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening; and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented.” — Arnold Palmer

Golf 10

For those of you who didn’t play golf today, it was decided that since Thursday is Thanksgiving Day, we would instead have our regular tournament on Wednesday 11-25-15 at the same 7:30 AM time.

This week’s top golfers were Richard Guzik and Richard Wibbelman. They both had the top gross score of 78, but Wibbelman also earned the top net score with a 60. High-fives go out to both of these champions.

“The ardent golfer would play Mount Everest in somebody put a flagstick on top.” — Pete Dye

For those of you who missed the luncheon, the Board Member positions for the coming year were voted into office. All current Board Members ran unopposed, so the Board remains the same. We also discussed the fact that our membership numbers are down, so if anyone runs across any golfers 55 years of age or older who might be interested in joining, please tell them about our club. Also, it is with a heavy heart that we accept Dick Kohnman’s retirement from his Editorship of the Pars and Scars publication after umpteen years on the job. Dick suggested that maybe we should phase out the Pars & Scars. With the exception of member’s birthdays, all the rest of the pertinent information can be posted on the website. We’ll see how this works out. Thanks Dick for a job well done all these years. On a final note, at the luncheon someone suggested that we pass a local rule prohibiting any of our members from dying until we can bolster our membership.

Golf 5

The top golfer of today’s tournament was John Foss with a gross score of 81. The best net score was a 62 by yours truly. I think I’m starting to get the hang of this game. Anyway, way to go John.

Bob Escobedo

Our top golfers for this week were Rich Karas with a gross score of 83. Von Williams had the best net score with a 64. Way to go guys.

“The difference in golf and government is that in golf you can’t improve your lie.” — George Deukmejian

Don’t forget about the meeting and luncheon to be held on Nov 12th at the Wedgewood. Also, don’t forget about the Sea Bee tournament on Monday Nov 9th. Previous notices had Nov 10th as the date, but it’s actually on the 9th. We also need more sign-ups for both of these activities. Just a reminder, November is our membership renewal month. Early renewals are greatly appreciated.

Next week we will be playing a Stableford Tournament. The scoring will be as follows:

Double bogie = 0 points
Bogie = 1 point
Par = 2 points
Birdie = 4 points
Eagle = 8 points

“A perfectly straight shot with a big club is a fluke.” — Jack Nicklous

Just a couple of reminders. Thurs. Nov. 12th is our club luncheon at the Wedgewood right after our weekly tournament. $ 6.00 is a good price for a nice deli-type sandwich. Don’t forget about the next “away” tournament at the SeaBee base on Nov 10th. It’s $ 35.00 at the door with $ 10.00 going to Ron Laufer. If you don’t have a base pass, you will need to apply for one ASAP since it takes about 2 weeks for it to be approved. This is the last away-tournament of the year. Next Thursday’s tournament will be a scramble.

Congratulations go out to our two top golfers of the week. Richard Guzik had the top gross score with a 78. Peter Wright had the best net score with a 61. Way to go guys.

RESULTS FOR 10-08-15

“You must have long-range goals to keep you from being frustrated by short-term failures.” — Charles Noble

Four announcements:

1. The weekly tournament start time is going to remain 7:30am until further notice.

2. We are now accepting membership dues for the coming year. It’s easier all the way around if we can start processing the membership fees a little early. If you can help us out with this, it will be greatly appreciated.

3. During last week’s tournament, John Gonzales scored a hole-in-one on hole #5. This information was sent to me along with that week’s scores, but I was late in getting home and late in posting the scores so I didn’t scroll down far enough on the email sent to me that contained the scores and the notice of John’s H.I.O. For this I apologize. Congratulations go out to John. Hole-in-ones are few and far between and so we celebrate these rare occurrences by giving acknowledgement to the skilled golfer. Some say H.I.O.s are pure luck. I’ve always said, skill gets you close enough to enable Lady Luck to do her thing. John will be receiving a $ 100.00 check at our next tournament.
DSCN0066(sm) This is a photo of John that I had in my files. It was taken about a year ago.

4. The next away tournament will be on 11-10-15 at Naval Base Ventura County (the Seabee Base). The cost will be $ 35.00 at the door and an additional $ 10.00 going to Ron Laufer, our tournament chairman. The first T-time is set for 7:30 AM (0730 hours for all you military veterans). The sign-up sheet and applications-to-play will be available next Thursday.

The winners of this week’s tournament were: Steve Smith with the best gross score (80) and Charles McLaughlin with the best net score (59). Way to go guys.

Regards,
Bob Escobedo

Late post: We will be having luncheon at the Wedgewood after our golf tournament on Nov 12th. Phil Youker will be able to start collecting the fees beginning next Thursday.
