“I never blame myself when I’m not hitting. I just blame the bat and if it keeps up, I change bats. After all, if I know it’s not my fault that I’m not hitting, how can I get mad at myself?” — Yogi Berra

I thought it was only fitting to find a quote from Yogi Berra since he just passed away. Not everything is said made sense (i.e. this quote), but he was a funny guy just the same.

Congratulations goes out to our top golf team of this month’s scramble. The team of Laufer, Obrien, Wright and Walker came in first with a gross score of 64 and a net of 52. Way to go guys.

Right below the results is a post that was sent to me by Dick Kohnmann regarding Joe Toy, one of our long-time members. He hasn’t been around lately because he stopped playing when he began to lose his eyesight, but he has attended some of our barbecues in the recent past. He will be 102 years old on Oct 20th.

“The will to win is important, but the will to prepare is vital.” — Joe Paterno

Another Club Championship is complete. We took our place on the course, did the best that we could and now those golfers that prevailed as the winners of the tournament played over the last two Thursdays, have been declared. Congratulations go out to our top golfers. Richard Guzik is our new Club Champion in the Top-Gross-Score division, Jerry Workman took first place in the Super-Senior division and John Gonzales earned the first place prize in the Low-Net division. Way to go guys. An honorable mention goes out to Robert Charbonneau who had the best net score for today’s tournament with a 64.

$ 100.00). Top right: Jerry Workman (smiling because he also won $ 100.00). Bottom left: File photo of John Gonzales playing at Mountain View (happy because he won $ 50.00). On a side note, I wasn’t aware that our new Club Champion, Richard Guzik, had won this event 7 times previously (2002, 03, 05, 07, 08, 09 and 2012). Way to go Richard.

For those of you who weren’t at today’s golf tournament, Joe Henry announced that the Fall club barbecue slated for this Friday, has been cancelled due to a low turn out. We only had approximately 25 members sign up. In order to mitigate our expenses we need to have closer to 60. Maybe next time.

Bob Escobedo

“Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” — Michael Jordan

This had to be the hottest and the most humid golf day of the year. It was a scorcher, especially for those who chose to walk the course. But like the Navy Seals say, “What doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger”.

At today’s Board meeting, the subject of entering tournament scores into the SCGA computer came up. For those new members that aren’t sure how this is done, all scores are entered by the Tournament Chairman. There is no need to enter your score since this will result in a duplicate entry.

Don’t forget about the club barbeque that’s scheduled for Friday September 25th. It’s only $ 10.00 per person and it will feature the one-and-only Joe Henry, BBQ Manager-Chef extraordinaire, on the grill (where can you get a BBQ dinner in this town for that price?). Come support the club and get some great eats. Also, we can always use some volunteers for set up between 9AM and 10AM on the day of the BBQ.

If you scroll down past the posted scores you’ll find the latest issue of the PARS-N-SCARS publication brought to you by Dick Kohnmann. Thank you Dick for the time and effort you put into this great publication.

Congratulations goes out to our two top golfers of the week. Richard Guzik had the best gross score with a 78 and John Gonzales had the best net score with a 63. This puts them in the lead for the Club Championships. I don’t have the results for the Super Seniors. Way to go guys.

“It isn’t hard to be good from time to time in sports. What is tough is being good every day.” — Willie Mays

Just a reminder to all. Next week is the first week of the Club Championship. To qualify, players must play both weeks (9/10 and (/17). Players can still play in the weekly tournament if they are unable to play both weeks. All players will be playing to their lowest handicap during the month of July, August and September. If there are any questions, please contact Earl Clark.

THE GOLF SWING by Roy McAvoy (from the movie Tin Cup).
I tend to think of the golf swing as a poem. The critical opening phrase of this poem will always be the grip, which the hands unite to form a single unit by the simple overlap of the little finger. Lowly and slowly the club head is led back, pulled into position not by the hands, but by the body, which turns away from the target, shifting weight to the right side without shifting balance. Tempo is everything, perfection unobtainable, as the body coils down at the top of the swing. There’s a slight hesitation. A little nod to the gods to concede that we are fallible and that perfection is unobtainable. And now the weight begins shifting back to the left, pulled by the powers inside the earth. It’s alive this swing! A living sculpture. Then down through contact, always down, striking the ball crisply, with character. A tuning fork goes off in your heart. Such a pure feeling is the well-struck golf shot. Now the follow-through to finish. Always on line. The reverse C of the Golden Bear! The steelworker’s power and brawn of Carl Sandburg’s Arnold Palmer! End, the unfinished symphony of Roy McAvoy. (Photo is of Neil Dawson, taken this morning at the #1 T-box)

Our top golfer this week was Tony Merriman who had the best gross score (79) as well as the best net score (61). Way to go Tony.
