I tend to think of the golf swing as a poem. The critical opening phrase of this poem will always be the grip, which the hands unite to form a single unit by the simple overlap of the little finger. Lowly and slowly the club head is led back, pulled into position not by the hands, but by the body, which turns away from the target, shifting weight to the right side without shifting balance. Tempo is everything, perfection unobtainable, as the body coils down at the top of the swing. There’s a slight hesitation. A little nod to the gods to concede that we are fallible and that perfection is unobtainable. And now the weight begins shifting back to the left, pulled by the powers inside the earth. It’s alive this swing! A living sculpture. Then down through contact, always down, striking the ball crisply, with character. A tuning fork goes off in your heart. Such a pure feeling is the well-struck golf shot. Now the follow-through to finish. Always on line. The reverse C of the Golden Bear! Our top golfer this week was Tony Merriman who had the best gross score (79) as well as the best net score (61). Way to go Tony.

The winners of this weeks two-man best-ball competitions was the team of Ron Carpenter, David Soriano, Michael Peltier and Howard Hoover. They had a combined net score of 113. Way to go guys.
The top golfer for the Seabee Base Tournament was Ron Carpenter, who had the best gross score with an 85 and the best net score with a 67. Way to go Ron.

Greetings fellow golfers. It looks like we made it through a very humid round of senior-scramble golf. The top-dog golf team for this week was the team of Olguin, Jones, McCollum and myself with a gross score of 62 (6 under par). When you look at the results you’ll notice that many of the names of those golfers listed last on each team, are incomplete. For some reason the form that is being used for the scramble results won’t take more than 31 characters including spaces. We need to fix that in the near future. Additionally, the 2nd place team listed only shows three golfers, but I’m pretty sure I saw Jack Fenelon with that group, so apparently his entire name was excluded. If we don’t get this problem resolved by the next scramble day, we’ll need to make sure each team has at least a couple of golfers with short last names, ha ha.
Next week we have the away tournament at the Hueneme naval base and Thursday’s tournament will be a 4-man 2 best-ball competition.

Congratulations go out to our top golfers of the week. Patrick Reeves and Gary Hibner tied for the best gross score with an 84. The best net scores were posted by Peter Wright and myself. We both had 65s. Additionally, when I received today’s results, there was a notation included in the email which read, “Money bags Wibbelman the only skin.” As it turns out, Richard Wibbelman WAS the only skin winner this week, earning $ 66.00 on hole #2. Way to go Richard.

Our top golfers this week were Rick Karas who had a gross score of 76 and John Gonzales who had a net score of 58. Way to go guys. For those of you who missed the luncheon today, the food was tasty and plentiful as always and we had the pleasure of meeting the recipient (student) of the Darrell Downey Scholarship award. His field of study is going to be forensic science in the criminal justice system.

Geetings my fellow golfers. It was nice to forgo the regular individual tournament competition today and team up with three others for the monthly scramble. I find playing as part of a team very enjoyable, plus there’s less PRESSURE if you hit a bad shot since you have three teammates who will most likely get a better hit. The subject of pressure brings us to this week’s quote:

Our top scramble team for this month was the foursome of Don Mulville, Benito Tapia, Hal Carlson and Richard Wibbelmann. This team had a gross score of 68 with a net score of 55. Way to go guys. It was a close tournament with the first 9 teams being within 2 strokes (gross) of one another by the end of the day.
