“One thing about golf is you don’t know why you play bad and why you play good.” — George Archer

Regarding last week’s skins results, Rich Guzik noticed that he was credited with a skin by mistake. A “3” was place on hole #16 when it should have been placed on #17. He notified Jack Fenelon who sent me the revision. I will post it tonight after I finish this post.

We will be having an away tournament at the Mountain View Golf Course in Santa Paula on Monday 02-27-17. The green fees are $25.00 with an additional $ 10.00 club entry fee for a total of $ 35.00.

We will also have an away round, not exactly a tournament, at the Ojai Valley Inn on 03-27-17. The cost is $ 75.00 for green fees plus $ 10.00 club fee for a total of $ 85.00. See attached (sent to me by Rich Guzik) for more info: OJAI VALLEY INN

Phil Youker has put together the Schedule of Events for 2017. I’ll be posting it right after I post this post.

“When I die, bury me on the golf course so that my husband will visit.” — Unknown author (obviously a golfer’s wife)

I received notice that a long-time member of our club, Jessie Gomez, recently passed away. He is not listed in our 2016 roster, and Phil Youker tells me he hadn’t played for a couple of years. Just the same, our condolences go out to his family during this trying time.

The top golfer of today’s tournament was Ron Carpenter who had the best gross score with an 86 and the best net score with a 64. Way to go Ron.

RESULTS FOR 12-22-16

“The golf swing is like a suitcase into which we are trying to pack one too many things.” — John Updike

It looks like Ron Laufer was able to get the day off from Santa’s workshop to come out and play golf this morning. But I can’t razz him too much since he pretty much carried our team to a first place win today. Also, Peter Wright almost had a hole-in-one on hole #6. His drive came to rest two inches from the hole for a tap-in birdie.

The winners of today’s scramble was the team of Laufer, Escobedo, Wright and Walker with a gross score of 66 and a net score of 54. Way to go guys.

Next week we will have a 4-man, 2-man best-ball tournament.

Merry Christmas to all and a happy new year.

Robert Escobedo

RESULTS FOR 12-15-16

“Golf is an ineffectual attempt to put an elusive ball into an obscure hole with implements ill-adapted to the purpose.” — Woodrow Wilson

I have two odd Saticoy golf-stories to share with you. The first occurred a couple of weeks ago on hole #15 (the par 3 facing north with the outhouse on the right). I shanked the drive and the ball went into the round fluffy tree just right and forward of the T-box. I thought I heard something squawk, possible an endangered spotted owl. He must have been a pretty tough old bird because the ball bounced back toward the water cooler. Total drive distance: 10 feet. No problem, all I have to do now is keep the ball low under the tree branches, but high enough to clear the 4″ curb of the cart path. Plus I have to hit it hard enough (4 iron) to get it to bounce along the fairway until it reaches the green. Next shot hits the curb at umpteen hundred mph and goes back up into the tree. If the spotted owl didn’t succumb to my drive, it was surely dead now. Now I’m lying two, hitting three next to same tree with the branches still in the way. I hit the same shot with the same 4 iron and the ball skids down the fairway and onto the green for a one-put and a four.

My second odd golf-story occurred today on hole #18. My drive came to rest in the mud on the right side of the fairway about 150 yards from the green. I figured that if I overpowered my 7-iron a bit, this would compensate for the sucking action of the mud. I actually overpowered it a bit too much. The centrifugal force caused the club head to pull away from my body a bit too much and I shanked the ball. It was a powerful hit towards the parking lot and right into Jack Bonifield’s Honda Odyssey van. It definitely left a golf-sized dent on the rear passenger-side of his ride. I left a note on the vehicle since I didn’t know who it belonged to at the time. No doubt about it, I need to find me a new sport. This one is going to drive me to drinking. If anyone has a golf story they’d like to share, hit my up.

For those of you who haven’t been to our tournaments in the last couple of weeks, we lost one of our club members recently. Philip Poole left us at the age of 82 after a brief illness. His favorite pastimes were listed in the VCStar as playing cards and playing golf. He is probably on that big fairway in the sky headed for the green as we speak. Fare thee well Philip. We will miss you.

Today’s top-dog golfers were Jack Fenelon and John Gonzales who both had a gross score of 85. John also had the best net score with a 63. Way to go guys.

Robert Escobedo

At today’s Board meeting, one of the things we discussed was SCGA’s upcoming change in when members’ annual dues will be due. Instead of all memberships expiring at the end of the calendar year, they will now expire 12 months from the day the member joined, or renewed his membership. So if a new member joins in July, their membership will be good until the next July. This eliminates the free grace period that was given to those members who joined late in the year around November. This new change shouldn’t affect those members who typically renew at the end of the year, which is pretty much everyone.

The top golfers of today’s tournament were Benito Tapia with the best gross score of 83, and Peter Wright and David Soriano who tied for the best net score with a 64. Way to go guys.

Robert Escobedo

Sorry for the delay in posting this week’s results. Jack Fenelon, who sends me the results, had to leave town right after Thursday’s tournament. I was hoping to get Jack’s email with the results the next morning, but they didn’t arrive until about noon when I was already out and about taking care of personal business. I didn’t get home until this evening.

Thursday’s top golfer was none other than Rick Karas who not only had the best gross score with an 81, but he also had the best net score with a 63. Way to go Rick.

As most of you noticed, we had a mix up in the skins scores posted last week. They were a duplicate of the scores from the week before. I recently received the correct scores and I just posted them on last week’s results. The top golfers of today’s tournament were Benito Tapia with an 86 gross score and Tony Merriman with 69 net score. Way to go guys.

Have a great Thanksgiving

“Golf is the cruelest game because eventually it will drag you out in front of the whole school, take your lunch money and slap you around.” — Rick Strokes, Sports Illustrated, from the story: “Master Strokes.”

We had our SSMGC Board meeting today after the tournament. One of the agenda items was the installment of new officers. With the exception of a couple of positions, such as the Away Tournament Chairman, most of the positions remained unchanged. More info on that later. We also discussed finding a new location for our luncheons, in light of the Wedgewood snafu, so we’re looking at possibly going to a Round Table Pizza restaurant. We’re still checking that out. For those of you who recently paid your club dues for the upcoming year, thank you. For those who have yet to pay, don’t forget to write that check.

Next Thursday is Thanksgiving. For that reason we have moved our tournament to Wednesday. We will have four groups going out beginning at 7:30AM, so if you want to play, be there around 7AM.

Robert Escobedo

RESULTS FOR 11-10-16

“It is almost impossible to remember how tragic a place this world is when one is playing golf.” — John Updike

golf-is-importantsm

A message from the SSMGC President: Today’s luncheon was cancelled due to Wedgewood failing to book it properly. I confirmed that one of their employees mishandled the paperwork I submitted, so our reservation was never booked. That employee has since being terminated for various related issues. The bottom line is Wedgewoood dropped the ball again, so I advised them we will no longer be doing business with them. Refunds will be available next week. My apologies to all. The Board will hold a meeting next week after golf to elect officers. All are welcome to attend.

Thanks,
Phil Youker

We had four top golfers for today’s tournament. They were Ron Laufer and John Foss, both with a gross score of 85. Tony Merriman and Larry McCollum both had the top net score of a 68.
