RESULTS FOR 05-19-16

Golf is won or lost one stroke at a time; much like peeling an onion one layer at a time, and sometimes you weep. (Inspired by Carl Sandburg and his quotation on why life is like an onion).

Greetings from downtown Vernal, UT. I just got back from my granddaughter’s high school graduation in Denver, CO. It was slow going on highway 40 coming back because of all the deer that were hanging around near the roadway. I’d like to share a couple of pics with you. On the shot of the deer, I grabbed my camera as I was driving but I didn’t have time to increase the shutter speed, so it’s a bit blurry. The second pic is of highway 40 taken yesterday en route to Denver (click to enlarge).

The next club luncheon is scheduled for July 21st. If you’ve signed up to play Elkins on the 23rd of this month, the last day to pay Ron Laufer is next Thursday.

Every so often, while playing in our tournaments on Thursdays, someone will bring up the subject of politics. I get enough politics from the news and from Facebook, especially during this emotionally- charged election year. I don’t know how all of you feel about this, but I’d rather just play golf and leave the politics off the course, especially when the topics deal with race or religion.

Today’s top golfers were Earl Clark with the best gross score of 85. The best net score was posted by
Don Walker with a 63. Way to go guys.

Don’t forget about the barbecue tomorrow. Lots of good food and good music, with the music being provided by two of our own club members. Hopefully they can play their instruments better than they play golf. Remember, the more beer you drink, the better the music will sound. Also, don’t be alarmed it you hear coyotes howling from South Mountain. It’s a normal reaction once the duo starts to sing. Regarding the President’s Cup tournament, last call for sign-ups for the qualifying first round will be Thursday right before the start of the round. Even if you don’t want to compete in the President’s Cup, you can still play in the regular tournament to be held at the same time.

The top golfers of today’s scramble tournament was the team of Mulville, Reeves, Soriano and Allison. They had a gross score of 64 and a net score of 52. Way to go guys.

For those of you coming to our club barbecue on the 29th of this month at Mountain View, if you have any golf items, new or used, that you wouldn’t mind parting with, we could use some for the raffle. Please no fruitcakes. We could also use some dessert goodies such as cakes, pies or cookies. You don’t need to bring a large batch for everyone; just one pie or one bag of cookies will work. Also try to bring your wives or girlfriends because we’re going to have some live entertainment that includes some nice romantic tunes.

The top golfers of this week’s tournament were Richard Guzik with a gross score of 77 and Jack Fenelon with a net score of 59.

DSC_6345(sm) I shot this photo of Jerry Workman and Ron Laufer at the start of the Darrell Downey tournament held this last Saturday. For a few more photos of the tournament, scroll past today’s tournament results. Dick Kohnman also took a ton of photos but I wasn’t able to create a link to the Shutterfly website. I understand he sent the link to many of our members so maybe you already saw them. They were pretty good.

Don’t forget about the club barbecue on April 29th at the Mountain View Golf Course. There will be lots of good tasting barbecue and it’s confirmed that we will have live music during happy hour. A couple of our members are going to be playing a little of this and a little of that, with some old fashion rock & roll thrown in. But we’re going to keep their identities a mystery for now. Also, the next “away” tournament will be held on May 23rd at the Elkin’s Golf Course. The cost is $ 43.00 just to play, and $ 53.00 if you want to enter the tournament. See Ron Laufer if you’re interested.

The top golfers of this week’s tournament were Richard Guzik with a gross score of 74 and Gary Hibner with a net score of 58. Way to go guys.

RESULT FOR 03-31-16

“There may be people who have more talent than you, but there’s no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do.” —Derek Jeter

Golf 23(USED) Since Easter was last Sunday, I decided to find a golf cartoon with a rabbit in it.

When I first started playing golf a few years ago, I thought I could learn on my own by watching PGA tournaments on TV, by watching the golf channel and by reading books like Golf for Dummies. I progressed very slowly and my swing was never the same from one day to the next. My biggest problem was that I couldn’t step outside myself and stand on the sidelines to examine my swing. I had no idea what I was doing wrong. It was all trial and error (mostly error) and hitting 500 balls a day became a waste of time because I was hitting 450 of them wrong. The best thing I ever did for my game was to take a lesson from Chad Wright, a PGA instructor. Immediately a saw a difference after he got rid of my “chicken wing”. Then I took 4 lessons from Robert Secrest and that really changed my game for the better. I went from a 38 HC to a 23 and I’ve been improving ever since. In the photo below, Robert Secrest instructs his young-golfers class at Saticoy. I took the photo this morning from the #14 T-box. I would recommend lessons for anyone who wants to be a better golfer regardless of what your HC is. But especially if you’re having a problem with your swing and you just can’t figure out what you’re doing wrong. The time, effort and money spent now will benefit you for years to come.

The winners of todays 4-man 2-best-ball tournaments was the team of Earl Clark, Jack Fenelon, Chris Bartelson and Don Walker. They had a total net score of 111. Way to go guys.
