RESULTS FOR 11-19-20

Greetings fellow golfers,

There won’t be any golf next week because of the Thanksgiving holiday.  Golf will resume on Thursday Dec 3rd.

Regarding hole #7/#16, Jack Fenelon wrote: There’s a lot of mud on the right side and on the long fairway.  If your ball comes to rest in a muddy area, you  get a free drop out of the mud, without a penalty, no closer to the hole.

Now that winner is almost here, we are going to start playing winter rules in which you’re allowed to pick up your ball on the fairway, clean it, then place it back where it was.

Today’s top golfers were Jack Fenelon with an 87 gross score and me with a 65 net.

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving.

Regards,

Robert Escobedo

RESULTS FOR 11-12-20

Greetings fellow golfers,

It’s that time of the year again.  Time to pay our membership dues of $ 60.00.  You can pay on-line by going to the SCGA (Southern CA Golf Association) website, or you can give your check to Von Williams if you catch him at our tournaments.  Most member’s dues are due at the end of the year.  Those newer members who joined in mid year don’t have to pay until their anniversary date comes around.

On another note, there have been some concerns voiced by some of our members regarding slow-play.  Apparently some golfers are slower than usual with their pace of play.  This is due to a combination of walking slow, being slow at choosing the right club, numerous practice swings and slow at putting their clubs away.  As a general rule, once it’s your turn to hit, this should be done within 40 seconds, preferably sooner.  Slow-play affects your group and every single golfer behind you.  It’s a one-stroke penalty for slow-play on the first offense.  Two-strokes on the second, and disqualification on the third.  Everyone is encouraged to play “ready golf”.  If it’s not your turn, but the other person isn’t ready, go ahead and hit as long as it’s safe to do so.

Another item that came up recently is “holing out”.   There are no “gimme” putts in stroke tournament play.  The technical term is a conceded putt.  This is where you aren’t required to make your final close putt because your opponents concede that there’s no way you can miss, or the outcome will not make a difference.  Gimme putts are regularly done among golfers playing for fun.  They are not allowed in stroke-tournament play, although conceding a putt is allowed in match play.  In our tournaments,  you must hit the ball into the cup on every hole and you must count every stroke it takes to do so, even the one-handed misses from one foot away.  Failure to hole out will result in disqualification.

This week’s top golfers were Earl Clark and Fred Rudy.  They both had a 94 gross score and a 71 net.  Way to go guys.

Robert Escobedo

RESULTS FOR 11-05-20

Greetings fellow golfers,.

Next week’s results won’t be posted until Monday.  Jack Fenelon will by out of town until Sunday and will send me Thursday’s results Monday afternoon.

Chris Bartelson and I played Camarillo Springs Tuesday with a friend named Al.  During the round, my cart died.  It wasn’t because the battery ran down.  Al tried to give me a push  with his cart to see it this would get mine started, but then his cart also quit.  We tried the usual things like turning the ignition off and on and pulling up on the accelerator pedal.  Nothing worked until another golfer came by, lifted the seat, and threw a switch by the battery.  Apparently they have a circuit breaker that flips off at times.  This did the trick.  Camarillo Springs’ carts look identical to the ones we use at Saticoy, so if your cart ever stops running and it’s not the battery or the accelerator pedal, look for the switch under the passenger side of the seat.

Today’s top golfers were Pat Reeves with and 86  gross score and me with a 64 net.

Robert Escobedo

RESULTS FOR 10-15-20

Greetings fellow golfers,

It is with a heavy heart that I report the passing of one of our long-time members.  I received notice from Dick Kohnmann that Joe Henry passed away on September 28 of a pulmonary embolism while in the intensive care unit.  Joe was a long-time member, but hadn’t been active in the club for about five years due to medical problems.  He was one of our board members and served as club president.  Joe was also a member of the Elks Lodge and held the position of Exalted Ruler.  When our club held it’s bi-annual barbecues, Joe was able to let us use the Elks Lodge.  He would spend the entire day organizing and preparing for the barbecues.  Joe retired from the County of Ventura where he worked as a dispatcher in the Fleet Maintenance Department.  Prior to that, in his younger days, he was a race car driver for NASCAR and worked on the cars too.  He was also a veteran of the U.S. armed forces and served in Korea during the war.  If there’s a golf course in heaven, then Joe out there on the fairway with the rest of our guys.

Today’s top golfers were Jack Fenelon with an 85 gross score and Dale Watson with a 52 net.  Way to go guys.

Regarding the skins payout, each winner will get $ 3.00 per skin, instead of $ 2.00 as shown on the document.

Regards,

Robert Escobedo

RESULTS FOR 10-01-20

Greetings fellow golfers,

Jack Fenelon asked me to reiterate some of the local rules that not everyone may be aware of.

Golf balls in footprints: If your ball comes to rest in a footprint in a bunker, you are allowed to pick it up and place it on a surface outside of the footprint, but no closer to the hole.  There is no penalty for this.  If you take a drop out of the bunker, then there is a two-stroke penalty.

Golf balls in gopher holes: If your ball comes to rest in a gopher hole, it can be removed.  You then get a free drop within a club length of the gopher hole, but no closer to the pin.  There is no penalty for this.  If your ball lands on or near a gopher mound and your  swing will most likely be impeded by the mound, you also get a free drop.

South perimeter fence on hole 4/13:  When you look down the fairway from the T-box on this hole, if your ball ends up against the protective netting on the right border, you get a free drop away from the netting, no closer to the hole.  To qualify for the free drop, your ball has to be close enough to the netting that your swing is impeded by the netting.  In any area where there isn’t protective netting installed, you don’t get a free drop.  If the ball goes through the net, but not the perimeter chain-link fence (comes to rest between the net and the chain-link fence) you get  a fee drop.  If the ball goes through the net and through the chain-link fence, you are SOL because the ball is now out of bounds and considered a doggy toy.  (Note: You do not get a free drop when your ball comes to rest against the right border fence of hole #1/10 or hole #7/#16, or any other perimeter fence).

Golf carts near the greens:  Golf carts are not to be driven within 25 feet of any green, especially along the fringe (frog hair).  Some of our golfers were seen doing this today.  Many golfers putt from the fringe.  Tire marks interfere with the movement of the ball as it rolls along the fringe.  Also, the weight of the cart can compress and damage the grass around the greens when subjected to frequent traffic.  Some courses have 20 yard limits.

Today’s top golfers were Jack Fenelon with the best gross score of 81 and David Soriano with the best net score of 59.   Way to go guys.

Regards,

Robert Escobedo

RESULTS FOR 09-24-20

Greetings fellow golfers,

It took me awhile to get this post published today.  For some reason, the website would not accept the normal-sized small jpeg photos.  I even resized them down to a “1”.  I kept getting a notice that the pixel size was too big, so I had to make several attempts at finding the “Goldilocks” size (not to big and not too small).  I finally got the photos downloaded to the website.  They may not enlarge very well due to the small pixel count.

Below are the winners of this year’s SSMGC Club Championship. Below left is Club president Earl Clark awarding a $ 100.00 check to Jack Felelon who is our gross-score champion.  Jack is also our tournament chairman.  On the right is Dom Dinielli holding his $ 100.00 check for winning the net-score division.  Dom is our 2nd Vice President and also our handicap chairman.  Below left is George Rose with his $ 50.00 check for winning the Super-Seniors division.  Congratulations to all.  It looks like these guys were able to bring their “A” games to the Club Championship tournament.

(Note:  I had to chase these guys down on the golf course today.  That’s why Earl Clark is only in one photo).

The top golfers of today’s tournament were Thomas Tone with a 91 gross score, and Bolden Roosevelt with  a 63 net score.  Way to  go guys.

Regards

Bob Escobedo
